Hi! My name is Jonas Fischbach and this website is a showcase for my homebrew Game Boy projects. Get them for free on itch.io by clicking on the boxes below.
My goal is to offer games that look and feel like officially licensed Game Boy games from back in the day with all the features that were common for such games.
My latest creation is “Lunar Lancer”, a shoot ’em up released to celebrate the 35th Game Boy anniversary in 2024. My previous releases are “Retroid”, a brick-breaking game first published in 2016, and “Into the Blue”, a puzzle game released in 2018.
All are available for free and can either be played on the real hardware, on compatible hardware such as the Analogue Pocket or on any emulator. If you have any comments, please feel free to drop me a line via the contact form on the bottom of this page or contact me on X.
How do I play these games?
To play my games, there are two options: Either you play on a real Game Boy (or a compatible device) or you use an emulator and play on your PC.
The easier solution is to install an emulator on your PC. The ROM files from this website will work with any accurate Game Boy emulator of your choice. However, I strongly suggest to use “BGB” (free download here). “BGB” is not only one of the most accurate emulators out there but also the one that was used for debugging during the creation of the games. Also, make sure you have a gamepad connected to your PC. Acceptable gamepads are inexpensive and you will get a lot more fun out of emulated console games if you use one.
Since even the best emulator will never feel 100 % like the original, the puristic solution is to play on the original hardware. To do so, you will need a Game Boy and a flash cartridge. All my games were created for the classic “DMG” Game Boy but also run on the Game Boy Color, the Super Game Boy or any other compatible system such as the Analogue Pocket (not using any of the additional features of the latter). They were tested on the “Everdrive GB” but should also work with any other Game Boy compatible flash cartridge.
