Welcome to THE GREEN SCREEN!

Hi! My name is Jonas Fischbach and this website is a showcase for my Game Boy projects.

Currently you can download two games for the Game Boy. “Retroid” is a brick-breaking game and “Into the Blue” is a puzzle game. Both are available for free and can either be played on the real hardware or on an emulator. If you have any comments, please feel free to drop me a line via the contact form on the bottom of this page.

What kind of games do I get here?

My goal is to offer games that look and feel like officially licensed Game Boy games from back in the day with all the features that were common for such games. You will find many “Game Boy-themed” games on the internet, but most of them actually are PC games that only look like Game Boy games. In contrast, the games from this website work on the real Game Boy hardware. They were not created with the help of any of the tools that make game design easy nowadays. All games on this website were coded by only one person using only some very basic tools. These limitations make it impossible to bulid the largest, most complex or technically most impressive games. But my games are not intended to be large, complex or technically ground-breaking – they are intended to be fun!

How do I play these games?

To play the games offered on this website, there are two options: Either you play on a real Game Boy or you use an emulator and play on your PC.

The easier solution is to install an emulator on your PC. The ROM files from this website will work with any accurate Game Boy emulator of your choice. However, I strongly suggest to use “BGB” (free download here). “BGB” is not only one of the most accurate emulators out there but also the one that was used for debugging during the creation of the games. Also, make sure you have a gamepad connected to your PC. Acceptable gamepads are inexpensive and you will get a lot more fun out of emulated console games if you use one.

Since even the best emulator will never feel 100 % like the original, the puristic solution is to play on the original hardware. To do so, you will need a Game Boy and a flash cartridge. The games were created for the classic “DMG” Game Boy but also run on the Game Boy Color, the Super Game Boy or any other compatible system (not using any of the additional features of the latter). They were tested on the “Everdrive GB” and the “GB USB 64M Smart Card” but should also work with any other Game Boy compatible flash cartridge.
